For as long as I can remember, I was introduced to the knowledge of the existence of God. My memory goes back to being young enough to be in that small room at 2nd Presbyterian Church in Memphis, TN that had a half door with the top swung open for parents (or back then, 1973 or 4) or a known relative to see in to get you. I loved the Graham cracker snack-time. I had Godly parents and grandparents that always made reference to God, Jesus, and what the Bible says for our instruction. In fact, I knew John 3:16 way before I even knew how to read it. I never knew a time that I wasn’t instructed by Bible believing “saints” at that time. My life at that time consisted of when is the next time we were going to be gathering again with other “like-minded” believers. In September 1978, my dad took me to a Billy Graham Crusade event at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis. At the invitation time, I told my dad that I wanted to go down. My dad told me if that if is what my heart is telling me, go, but I will have to go by myself, alone, and that he would not be accompanying me (almost as if he was discouraging me). By the way, he wasn’t discouraging me at all, he just wanted to make sure that I knew, in my heart, what I was doing. So, all by myself (although I wasn’t “all by myself” or alone at all as Jesus Himself was with me), I made my way down the huge stadium stairway (in front of probably 10 to 20,000 people) down to the field, crossed the field to the north side 35 yard line, was met by an unknown man, and made my public profession to the commitment of giving my life to Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior. I would have to assume that my father on earth is the one who was most influential, but as John 6:44 says, its is God Himself, that draws you and no one can come to Him unless He draws you. So, I would have to say that full credit goes to my Heavenly Father for the planting of His seed and for giving me an earthly father, who was not just a father, but a faithful dad who was quick to water the Seed. At this point we had been going to church at Central Church (in Memphis) and my parents were members so I immediately “officially” joined and followed up my profession of faith with an immersed baptism, learned how to tithe, and began diving deeper to perhaps grasp a better understanding of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit and how they are 3 but 1. (see John ch. 17)
